The visiting team locker room at Shawano (Wis.) High School was vandalized with homophobic and racist slurs during the school's boys' basketball game against Menasha.
"I was enraged and heartbroken," Menasha native Olivia Bauer-Shimek told NBC 26 when asked how she felt about the graffiti.
In a statement to NBC 26, Shawano School District Superintendent Kurt Krizan said the school was made aware of the graffiti and removed it immediately. The Shawano School District has indicated that an investigation into the matter is underway.
"The words used in the graffiti were also unacceptable. We took this situation very seriously," Krizan wrote in part. "We are committed to ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for all students and visitors. Respect and accountability are core values of our school community, and we will continue to uphold and instill these values."
Bauer-Shimek said she would like to see an apology from Shawano.
"I overall hope that they are taking initiative to ensure that their students are safe and so that stuff like this doesn't happen again," she said.
