A group of middle school students in Texas found an officer's holstered gun in bathroom at the Heath High School athletics facility.
According to a letter sent by the Rockwall Independent School District to parents and staff, students from the Cain Middle School boys' gymnastics team were attending class at the Rockwall-Heath Indoor Athletic Facility when they found the firearm was left unattended in the restroom.
The gun had been left there accidentally by a Heath Department of Public Safety officer.
Officials said the firearm had been left there for about two minutes before the students found it. The students did not touch the firearm and immediately reported it to their coach who secured it.
"We are proud of the middle school students’ alertness and mature response, and we commend them for their quick action in notifying an adult. Please know that high school students were not present," the letter stated.
The Heath Department of Public Safety is conducting an internal investigation into the incident, officials said.
