Police are investigating the drowning death of a 4-year-old girl who was swimming unattended at a private athletic club in Sterling Heights, Mich.
According to Fox 2, the girl was pulled from the pool at Deer Lake Athletic Club by her sister. The girl was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The Oakland County Sheriff's Office said the two women who brough their children to the club put some pool toys into the water with their children — ages 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 — and left the pool area to order food and drinks.
The women were allegedly gone for about 35 minutes when the youngest child drowned. While there were pool noodles left in the pool, no life preservers were left with the children and there was no signs that a lifeguard was present.
Oakland County sheriff Mike Bouchard called the death tragic and avoidable.
The Oakland County Prosecutor's Office is reviewing the case for possible charges.
