An Iowa Lakes Community College bus carrying the school’s baseball team crashed and overturned in a ditch in rural Iowa on Wednesday, killing one person and injuring all other 32 occupants.
As reported by The Associated Press, the 11 a.m. crash involved the bus and no other vehicles, the Iowa State Patrol said in a statement. It occurred on a highway near Twin Lakes, about 110 miles northwest of Des Moines.
Photos of the crash scene viewed by AB Today show a clear day, with no snow cover on the highway or adjacent fields.
Three people were airlifted to trauma hospitals in Des Moines, said Bruce Musgrave, director of Calhoun County emergency services, according to the AP. Others were taken by ambulance to four hospitals in the area.
The Iowa Lakes baseball team was scheduled to play at North Arkansas College starting Thursday, but all four games have been canceled. The school is a member of the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference, which said it was "heartbroken to learn of the bus accident."
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the student-athletes, coaches, staff, families, and the entire Iowa Lakes community during this incredibly difficult time," the conference said in a statement, as reported by the AP.
