Friday’s scheduled football game between Heritage High and Rockdale County High in Conyers, Ga., was cancelled after an on-field fight prior to kickoff.

According to 11 Alive news, the altercation took place during pre-game warm-ups at Rockdale County High School. Deputies responded to the scene and school officials subsequently decided to cancel the game. The schools immediately began an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the fight and hold the involved student-athletes responsible.

Neither school has released additional details about the incident, including whether student-athletes were injured or what disciplinary action will be taken.

In a statement, superintendent Dr. Stephanie Johnson said, “Rockdale County Public Schools is committed to providing safe, positive, and respectful environments for our students, staff, families, and community members. Unfortunately, due to an altercation that occurred on the field during pregame warmups, the decision was made to cancel the August 28th Heritage High School vs. Rockdale County High School football game. While we recognize the disappointment this decision may cause for our student-athletes, coaches, families, and supporters, the safety and well-being of everyone involved must remain our highest priority. The behavior displayed does not reflect the values of sportsmanship, respect, and integrity that we expect from all participants representing our schools and community.”

Rockdale and Heritage have a long-standing rivalry. The teams have competed every year since 1984, so Friday’s cancellation also marks the end of a 42-year tradition. The schools have not announced if a make-up game will be scheduled.

According to Sports Illustrated, the Georgia High School Association will also be investigating the pre-game altercation to determine if a fine should be issued to either school.

“We appreciate the cooperation of our students, families, and community as we complete this investigation,” said Johnson. “Our focus remains on ensuring a safe and supportive environment where competition is conducted with respect and where all participants can take pride in representing their schools with honor."
