Following Friday night’s football game between Parkview High School and Reeds Spring High School in Springfield, Mo., a Parkview student-athlete was attacked in the locker room and stabbed by a fellow Parkview student.
According to the Springfield Daily Citizen, the student-athlete was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
Several other students witnessed the attack, and school administrators intervened quickly to aid the victim. When police arrived, the assailant was detained and taken into custody.
“We want to assure you that safety remains our highest priority and that immediate and appropriate steps were taken in response,” Principal Josh Lollis wrote in the statement to Parkview families and staff members. “We are fully cooperating with law enforcement and will administer discipline in accordance with the student handbook.”
The identities of the students have not been released, as they are both juveniles, but the perpetrator is facing charges of second-degree assault and armed criminal action. Due to the severity of the crime, he could be tried as an adult.
"We have a 16-year-old male in custody currently charged with what would be the felony of second-degree assault and armed criminal action committed by an adult," Bill Prince, the Chief Juvenile Officer in Greene County, said.
Springfield Public Schools released a statement as reported by Ozarks First, that said, “We are happy to report that the student is expected to fully recover. The student responsible for the injury was detained by law enforcement. Immediately following the incident, we communicated directly with the families of football players to make them aware of what happened.”
