A 9-year-old boy died on Sunday after a soccer goal post collapsed on him as he played with members of his youth sports group, police said.
The boy, Tommaso Cerase, was playing with the league inside the building that houses the Food and Finance High School on West 50th Street when the pole fell at about 10 a.m., causing severe head trauma.
Cerase, who lived on the Upper West Side, was taken to Roosevelt Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A friend of Cerase's family who declined to give his name said his parents "are only asking to respect their grief. They have nothing to say, there is nothing to say ... He was a wonderful boy."
The family is originally from Italy, according to Facebook.
Samantha Moshen, 34, lives in the same building as the Cerase family. She said she didn't know them, but was devastated as a fellow mother.
"No one should have to go through this," she said. "It's horrendous"
"Unfortunately today, parents are going to have to go though the rest of their lives differently," she added. "It's never going to be the same."
