In a surprise move on Saturday, the University of Texas announced it would bring on Chris Del Conte as its new athletic director.

Del Conte, who had been the AD at Texas Christian University, replaces Mike Perrin, who will remain with the department as an adviser for Del Conte.

University president Greg Fenves announced the move.

“Chris has the experience, vision and character that’s needed for Texas to build on the Longhorns rich legacy and to continue winning with integrity for years to come,” Fenves said. “He knows the state of Texas, supports student-athletes, understands the media landscape of college sports and is one of the best athletics directors in the country.”

During his time at TCU, Del Conte helped to steer the program into the Big 12 Conference and headed a department that became a power in football.

According to the Dallas Morning News TCU will stay in house for its next athletic director, as Jeremiah Donati, TCU’s vice chancellor and associate AD for development is expected to be named AD during a press announcement this afternoon.
