Bernie Morelli Recreation Centre

Hamilton, ON
Construction Cost: $23.7 Million
Area / Square Feet: 55,000 sq.ft.
Occupancy Date: November 2018

The Bernie Morelli Recreation Centre is developed as part of a larger urban precinct to create an important new community hub for east Hamilton.

The precinct design incorporates three buildings and a new urban park: the new BMRC, an expansion to the existing historic building containing the Jimmy Thompson Memorial Pool, and a new secondary school. Master planned together to create a holistic urban environment, the buildings form an outdoor courtyard creating a new prominent civic destination for all residents of east Hamilton.

The BMRC consists of a leisure pool with hydrotherapy basin, universal changerooms, a large gymnasium, a walking/running track and a series of activity rooms, as well as spaces for youths, seniors and programming rentals. The massing of the new addition was developed as a continuous band, unifying the existing heritage facility and the new development while providing accessible connections and upgrades. Large skylights puncture the roofline across all major program elements, delivering diffuse natural lighting and optimal lighting conditions devoid of glare.
