The family of one-year-old Greyson Pelvin is seeking compensation from the town of Halton Hills, Ont., after the child burned his feet stepping on a hot metal grate near a splash pad.
On July 27, the Pelvin family was visiting the Gellert Community Park splash pad in Georgetown, Ont., when Greyson wandered from the splash pad and stepped on hot ground-level metal doors that protected the controls for the splash pad’s water jets. Greyson suffered second-degree burns to his feet and a minor burn on one of his hands.
The toddler was treated for his injuries at a nearby hospital, but he’s still recovering according to personal injury lawyer Adam Halioua.
“The little guy is getting better,” said Halioua. “He’s still in pain.”
The amount of compensation the family is seeking is yet to be determined, depending on the extent of the toddler’s injuries and how long he’s suffering.
Halioua said that the family hopes other towns will take notice of the situation, and make changes to their splash pads before another child is injured. The grate at Gellert Park has since been covered and fenced off to prevent further incidents.
“This was an inherent danger at this splash pad,” Halioua said. “There was a responsibility to take greater precautions to ensure the safety of all people attending the splash pad, particularly young children.”
