CDC: Youth Sports Have Led to Some COVID Outbreaks

The Centers for Disease Control is reporting that it is seeing outbreaks of COVID-19 stemming from youth sports and extracurriculars.

“We are learning that many outbreaks in young people are related to youth sports and extracurriculars, according to CDC guidance, these activities should be limited,” CDC director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said Monday during a White House press briefing. “If they are not, the risk of clusters can be prevented with cadence testing strategies as are being rolled out in so many places.”

In December, the CDC issued guidance for youth sports, noting that every community may have to adjust to local conditions and unique circumstances.

According to the New York Post, the latest daily average of new US hospitalizations in the past week is 4,970, she said — up 3 percent from the daily average during the previous seven-day period.

Walenksy said that there was not yet evidence as to whether new variants are behind the increase in transmission among young people, noting that vaccines for those under the age of 16 would have a “massive impact” on them transmitting the virus.
