About 15 acres of land on the campus of Oconee Memorial Hospital are slated to become an aquatic center if the financing goes through.
Greenville Health System trustees this week approved the transfer of 14.65 acres of the land to the Foothills YMCA for the center, said Hunter Kome, chief operating officer of GHS's Oconee Medical Campus.
The campus spans more than 150 acres, about half of which is undeveloped, Kome said. And over the years, an aquatic center has been envisioned there because it's central to Seneca, Walhalla and Westminster, the county's three largest towns, he said.
The Oconee Medical Holdings board of directors recently voted to approve transfer of the land so long as the YMCA meets several conditions, including obtaining financing for the project, which is set at about $8 million, Kome said. That's the next step.
"We deeply appreciate the support of (GHS) for this project," he said. "This project will help to improve the health of our community by creating new recreational opportunities.
"It will also make the county more attractive to businesses considering locating here."
