The University of South Alabama board of trustees convenes today to authorize the contract to begin construction of an on-campus football stadium. The $72 million project will be funded by a combination of athletic department monies, auxiliary enterprises and a mix of public/private funding. Pasadena ISD in Texas is giving its Veterans Memorial Stadium a facelift this offseason, a three-pronged plan that calls for new synthetic turf, a new scoreboard and a new LED lighting system. The renovation project — the largest the stadium has seen in about 10 years — also will include changes to the facility’s drainage system, a response to Hurricane Harvey. Officials in Breckenridge, Colo., held a ribbon cutting ceremony this week to mark the expanded Breckenridge Recreation Facility. After a $17 million upgrade, the facility added 11,000 square feet and an indoor children’s playground. Two indoor tennis courts were converted into a two-story fitness space that includes indoor turf, a weight room, group exercise space, a cardio fitness area and an indoor cycling studio. —Summit Daily
The University of Kentucky announced details of its planned renovation of Rupp Arena. New chair-back seating will be installed in the facility’s upper areas, reducing seating capacity to about 20,500 when complete. The renovation project will also add new club areas. —UKAthletics.com
Elder High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, announced plans for a state-of-the-art fitness center. Expected to be built in two phases, the 19,000-square-foot project will feature a first floor weight room, and a more than 6,000-square-foot multipurpose room on the second. San Jose State University broke ground on a pool that will be part of the school’s $130 million recreation and aquatics facility. Once complete, the 128,000-square-foot facility will house the school’s women’s swimming and diving teams, men’s and women’s water polo teams, and the general student body.
