Soccer legend David Beckham and his partners have been given the green light to begin demolition of Lockhart and Fort Lauderdale Stadiums.
The Fort Lauderdale City Commission voted to enter into an interim agreement with Beckham’s group that approved the demolitions and the subsequent building of a new facility on that plot of land.
The city attorney says that while the demolition may not happen anytime soon, the interim agreement allows Beckham and his group access to the site, so they can begin planning the next phase of the project.

Beckham’s group is developing a team called Inter Miami and plans to have a stadium in place on the Lockhart site in time to begin an inaugural MLS season in March 2020. Beckham has resorted to building in Fort Lauderdale after several unsuccessful attempts to build in Miami.Â
The current Lockhart Stadium opened in 1959 and has hosted more than a half-dozen soccer teams in that time. The stadiums have also played home to two professional baseball teams during MLB spring training.
