Peak Pickleball, a 24-court complex that its owner says will be the nation’s largest privately owned, indoor pickleball facility, will take over the vacant Burlington department store at the Chapel Hills Mall, northeast of Academy and Briargate boulevards in northern Colorado Springs.

Monument resident Scott Wilson, a former Dillon restaurateur and owner of an ATV and snowmobile rental company in Frisco, said he’s targeting an early fall opening for the facility.

The Burlington store, at 1730 Briargate Blvd., covers 80,380 square feet on two levels, El Paso County Assessor’s Office records show. New Jersey-based Burlington closed the store in 2020 and reopened the following year in a nearby shopping center southwest of Academy and Briargate.

Permits were pulled in April and May for initial demolition work inside the old Burlington store, according to Pikes Peak Regional Building Department records. The store is owned by a third-party limited liability company and not by a New York group that owns the rest of the mall. [The Tribune]

Jacksonville-based Stellar continues its investment at its Mandarin campus at 2900 Hartley Road.

Having opened its on-campus nutrition center, Stellar also is working on its proposed fitness center at 2955 Hartley Road on the property.

Stellar Group Inc., the design, engineering, construction, refrigeration and mechanical services firm established 39 years ago, is the contractor for the two-story, 11,876-square-foot project.

The campus is at northwest Interstate 295 and San Jose Boulevard.

The city is reviewing a permit application and civil engineering plans for the estimated $1.72 million fitness center project. [Jax Daily Record]

Following Boot Barn’s recent opening in Morris County, a new fitness center will occupy the remaining portion of a former Bed Bath & Beyond footprint at The Gardens in Mount Olive.

R.J. Brunelli & Co. announced last week signing Fitness Factory Health Club to a 16,400-square-foot lease at the 373,612-square-foot power center located at 10-50 International Drive S. Meanwhile, western wear and casual retailer Boot Barn’s first North Jersey location occupies 13,800 square feet.

Located with immediate or nearby access to Interstates 80 and Routes 46 and 206, the new additions bring the retail complex to 98% leased, said Danielle Brunelli, president and principal of Old Bridge-based R.J. Brunelli. They’re also just the latest to sign on at the former ITC Crossing South shopping center. Ross and Home Goods, both currently open, recently came on board and Skechers is set to debut in June. [NJBiz.com]

With under 100 days until Northwestern kicks off its 2024 football season against Miami of Ohio, gears are shifting into motion for the Wildcats’ lakeside venue. But how did the project come to be and what can fans expect as part of the game-day experience? Assistant Vice President and Deputy Athletics Director Jesse Marks answered some of our most pressing questions on the project.

As far as when the plan fell into place, Marks said preliminary conversations were had in March and began to enter design mode at the end of the month and into April. Marks said he visited possible alternatives such as SeatGeek Stadium but ultimately settled on this plan because of its benefits for fans, students and student-athletes.

“Would [SeatGeek Stadium] have been a venue for us to play games at? 100%,” Marks said. “But our student-athletes wouldn’t get home until three hours after the game and reunited with their parents after a long bus ride. Our fans have to be on highways for 45 minutes to an hour with traffic. That’s not the experience we want to provide.”

Once plans were approved by the NCAA, the Big Ten and the city of Evanston and deemed feasible for broadcast and game operations, the green light was on. [InsideNU.com]
