Thanks to the incredible leadership of loyal supporters, including a lead gift from Carl and Linda Tucker and their family, Wake Forest University will dedicate its new excellence center in their names on Tuesday, Jan. 21 prior to the Demon Deacons men's basketball game against North Carolina inside Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
The Tucker Family Student-Athlete Excellence Center will be the new home for Wake Forest Student-Athlete Services and Student-Athlete Development providing one space to promote the personal and professional development of Demon Deacon student-athletes. The center will include academic tutor spaces, meeting areas for seminars and career networking events, gathering areas for students for group project work and study sessions. Additionally, the Rovere Room has been completely upgraded with new technology and an operable partition that will allow flexible sizing of event and meeting space.
This project completes the 4th Quarter Drive in the Athletics quadrant of Wake Forest University's Reynolda Campus that includes the McCreary Football Complex, McCreary Football Field House, Sutton Sports Performance Center, Shah Basketball Complex, Dr. Caryl Guth Women's Basketball Clubhouse and Chris Paul Family Men's Basketball Clubhouse. We’re getting our first look at the $35,000 project put together by Houston Academy athletics. What once was a storage closet in the back of the school’s gymnasium is now an athletic training room for Raider recovery.
It’s been a goal for Athletic Director Jerry Browning at his last three schools in the position. He said, “Lot of schools don’t have athletic trainers and I think every school in America should have athletic trainers. The safety of our students is priority”.
Matt Rugger, Encore Sports Rehabilitation athletic trainer said, “Before this room we had a little spot in the weight room and I really didn’t have any privacy to work with my athletes. It would be a lot of noise in the background but here this is just a room where it’s an actual athletic facility. It’s important to have state-of-the-art nice equipment and a nice room that these athletes deserve." [WTVY]
The Pottsville School District is transforming an old, deteriorated gymnasium in its high school into a wellness center that soon will be used heavily by its physical education classes, sports teams and the public, district officials say.
The new facility, which has a turf field and two batting cages, is expected to open this month for Pottsville School District activities, and local youth sports programs and individuals will soon be able to rent it, officials said.
The center is in the old girls’ gymnasium, so named because it is where physical education classes for female students were held years ago before it became outdated.
The floorboards were warped, the windows were unprotected from breakage and there were other issues that needed repair, said Dr. Sarah Yoder, superintendent.[Republican Herald]
