Breaking Ground

Indiana University Indianapolis has broken ground on the forthcoming $110 million James T. Morris Arena. The facility will house a basketball/volleyball court with seats for 4,500 fans, as well as a multipurpose arena with an auxiliary gymnasium and community gathering spaces. A significant portion of the seating will be retractable to provide flexibility for events such as collegiate and high school sports and recreational activities. The facility will also provide approximately 16,000 square feet of office space for IU Indianapolis Athletics and select National Governing Bodies, including USA Track & Field.

The University of Southern California has broken ground on the Bloom Football Performance Center, following the announcement of a $50 million gift from the Ronald H. Bloom family. The 160,000-square-foot facility, scheduled to open in summer 2026, includes two full-length outdoor practice fields — one synthetic turf and one natural grass — and a state-of-the-art three-story building dedicated to helping USC’s student-athletes reach their fullest potential in all aspects of life.

Texas A&M University in Texarkana has broken ground on the Red River Credit Union Athletic Complex. The community has raised over $13 million to start the project, which will allow the university’s baseball, softball and tennis teams to host competitions on campus.

First Pitch

Real estate leaders in Milwaukee have moved forward with plans to develop the city’s historic Iron District around an 8,000-seat soccer-specific stadium. If approved, the project would develop an empty patch of land on the city’s north side. The stadium is intended to host a new minor league soccer team. Developers hope construction could start as early as this summer.

The University of North Texas Board of Regents has approved the completion of design work for phase one of the school’s Athletics Center expansion. More than $4.4 million from 38 UNT supporters has been committed toward the anticipated $10 million fundraising goal needed to complete phase one of the project. Total cost of the project will be based on the price of materials at the time of construction. The Athletics Center expansion will be completed in two phases, with the first focusing on space for strength and conditioning. The remodel will expand that area of emphasis from its current 6,180 square feet to more than 20,000 – or three times its original size.

Sacramento (Calif.) Republic FC has released a new rendering for its planned stadium in the city’s Railyards. The rendering from MANICA Architecture shows an overhead view from the southwest entrance and concourse. The stadium is part of a new development that will span 31 acres. The city estimates that total costs for the stadium, new entertainment venue and ancillary infrastructure will be $321 million.

Grand Openings

Boston University has completed a $13 million renovation of the Walter Brown Arena in the Case Center that includes new spaces for the Terriers women’s ice hockey team. The project included a 2,740-square-foot locker room and adjacent lounge and recovery area, as well as a full office suite for team staff, an athletic training room, a hydrotherapy room, an equipment room and four visiting locker rooms. The entrance to the arena also underwent a full renovation, and a 360-degree video board was installed above center ice.

San Diego FC held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the club’s new 50,000-square-foot soccer facility, which includes three natural grass soccer fields, two synthetic turf fields, a gym and rehabilitation center, a kitchen, a dining area and a locker room. The facility also includes the Right to Dream Academy, which will focus on the development of young players from San Diego and around the world.

Temple University held a grand opening for the school’s new on-campus tennis complex. The 52,000-square-foot facility includes new courts, enhanced spectator seating and upgraded amenities that will benefit both players and fans alike.
