Georgia's First Pro Cricket Stadium Coming to LaGrange
Cricket is the world’s second most popular sport — and soon, matches will be coming to metro Atlanta with the construction of the state’s first cricket stadium.
Selig Enterprises, a real estate developer creating a mixed-use community in LaGrange, sold 45 acres of the project to DAS Cricket Academy and the NJ Blackcaps, a professional cricket club in New Jersey. Now, that land will be home to the LaGrange Cricket Stadium.
“With its mild, year-round climate and proximity to the Atlanta airport, LaGrange serves as the perfect location for cricket’s next expansion,” DAS Cricket Academy founder Siddharth Das said in a statement. “We look forward to introducing this sport to a growing audience in the greater Atlanta region and showing why more than 2.5 billion people enjoy cricket worldwide.”
New Sports Facility Top Priority for Dubuque
Developing a new sports complex is one of the Dubuque City Council’s top priorities for the upcoming year.
A sports complex could create more than 1,000 jobs and generate at least $20 million in annual revenue for local businesses, according to a study commissioned by the Dubuque Racing Association.
81% of the 2,031 people surveyed by the DRA thought Dubuque’s current sports facilities are insufficient, and 36% said they leave the region for suitable facilities for training practices and league play.
“I have two kids, so I did one with basketball and one with baseball, so I’ve lived that life,” recalls Loras College Athletic Director Denise Udelhofen. “It’d be nice at least one weekend, I mean, not every weekend are you going to be here, but at least it’d be nice to have one weekend where you can stay home and compete at home.”
Wheaton College Eyes New Sports Complex
Wheaton College announced at this year’s Homecoming Weekend that the new “Faithfully Forward” campaign will include fundraising for renovations to Chrouser Sports Complex.
The announcement was made publicly at the Faithfully Forward “Evening of Music and Mission” held on Friday, Sept. 28. The event featured a concert by TAYA, a contemporary Christian music artist and former member of Hillsong Worship. Before TAYA took the stage, however, a video was shown to announce Wheaton College’s goals for the new capital campaign. President Philip Ryken then delivered some remarks, explaining the campaign’s goals in more detail, which included concept art for both Chrouser and the library. According to Ryken, Wheaton has raised $232 million in the quiet phase of the campaign. He said he plans to give another update on construction in October.
