Grand Sierra Resort Breaks Ground on New Arena
Grand Sierra Resort (GSR) broke ground today on a new 10,000-seat arena, which will serve as the home of Nevada Men's Basketball beginning in 2027-28. The arena marks the first phase of the property's $1 billion redevelopment project — the largest private capital investment in Reno's history. The event drew more than 500 civic leaders, university officials, and community partners, underscoring its significance for Northern Nevada.
The milestone ceremony featured arena renderings, a ceremonial shovel dig, and celebratory cold sparks and confetti. Speakers included GSR Owner Alex Meruelo, University of Nevada President Brian Sandoval, Athletics Director Stephanie Rempe, and Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve.
"This project represents a transformative moment for Reno and northern Nevada," said Meruelo. "Our investment reflects not only our commitment to this community, but our belief in its future as a premier destination for sports, entertainment, and hospitality."
App State Begins Advanced Planning on New Stadium Tower
App State Athletics is set to begin advanced planning for the Kidd Brewer Stadium East Tower construction project, following approval Monday from the Appalachian State University Board of Trustees.
"This is an exciting next step toward building the premier 40,000-seat stadium in college football," Director of Athletics Doug Gillin said. "We are grateful for the support of the university's Board of Trustees, Chancellor Norris and her leadership team, and our generous donors. Kidd Brewer Stadium's new East Tower will provide much-needed upgrades to Kidd Brewer Stadium operations, further enhance the game day experience for student-athletes and fans and drive economic growth in the High Country."
The East Tower will serve as a landmark facility in the High Country. App State has sold out of season tickets in four consecutive seasons and has boasted the top four attendance figures in school and Sun Belt Conference history over the last four years.
Arizona State Plans $100M Renovation of Desert Financial Arena
Arizona State University plans to spend a combined $135 million on renovating Desert Financial Arena and constructing a new football practice facility adjacent to Mountain America Stadium over the next three years.
The projected costs and timelines were presented to the University Governance and Operations Committee of the Arizona Board of Regents, which on Sept. 11 approved ASU’s Capital Improvement Plans for fiscal years 2027-30.
Arena renovations are projected to take up $100 million of the cost, with construction for both projects involving the athletics department scheduled to start in January 2027. Planning will begin early next calendar year.
