Lancaster Country Breaks Ground on New Regional Athletics Complex
Lancaster County will officially host a groundbreaking ceremony for its new Regional Athletic Complex at noon on Tuesday, Aug. 25. Located at 3434 Roselyn Avenue—off Charlotte Highway in the Roselyn neighborhood development—the $36.9 million facility is designed to serve local residents while drawing competitive sports tourism to the region.
Designed as a premier sports hub, the complex will feature three turf baseball fields complete with batting cages and bullpens, alongside three grass soccer fields sized for collegiate competition. Both sports zones will include dedicated concession stands. Once finished, the University of South Carolina – Lancaster baseball team will host its games at the site.
“I believe I share the same excitement as our citizens as we celebrate the groundbreaking of our new regional park,” said Lancaster County Council Chairman Brian Carnes. “This will be more than a place with championship-quality athletic fields. It will be a place where families gather, children play, athletes compete and our community comes together. Most importantly, this is an investment that will serve Lancaster County today and create memories and opportunities for generations in the future.”
Buncombe County Approves Design Contract for New Indoor Sports Park
An indoor rec center is headed to Buncombe County Sports Park near the intersection of Sand Hill School Road and Apac Drive, adjacent to the dog park and community garden. At Tuesday evening's Buncombe County Commissioners meeting, the board approved a nearly $1.6 million design contract for the facility — the first indoor rec center to be run by the county.
Proposed plans include courts for volleyball and basketball, office space for parks and recreation staff, and multipurpose space for community events and polling sites. The addition of indoor space also functions to help the park serve as a hub for emergency operations if needed.
It's still early stages for the rec center, but the county has already allocated $19.68 million to bring it to life. At the meeting, General Services Project Manager Ronnie Lunsford estimated it would take about two and a half years to get it constructed.

As the Panthers pursue another trip to the postseason, they’ll do so under some pretty impressive lights.
Lakeside High School opened the doors to it’s brand new gymnasium over the weekend. A 2,130 seat facility complete with a new court and overhead scoreboard.
The gym was completed as part of 10-year building program approved by Columbia County School District.
“It’s an awesome gym, it’s probably the best one around here right now,” Lakeside Volleyball Head Coach Scott Newland said. “We’re just excited to have all this space and the opportunity to host more teams.”
