Cheyney University Breaks Ground on $36.5M Athletics Complex
Cheyney University in Thornbury is building a new $36.5 million athletics complex, which officials call a major investment in the student experience and another step in the transformation of the nation’s first historically Black college or university.
The facility will include three basketball courts with volleyball capabilities, a fitness center, locker rooms, multipurpose areas, athletics offices, recreation areas, concessions and other supporting spaces. The facility is slated to be complete in 2028.
The project includes outdoor athletics improvements, including a new track and soccer field along with related site and pedestrian improvements across the campus. The track and field is slated to be complete by fall 2027.
Fort Hays State Celebrates Opening of Bickle-Schmidt Athletic Complex
Fort Hays State University welcomed the community during Homecoming weekend to celebrate the official ribbon cutting of the Bickle-Schmidt Athletic Complex, a transformative facility supported by nearly $7.8 million in private donations. Guests explored the building and saw firsthand how the new space is strengthening the future of Tiger Athletics.
During the event, President Tisa Mason thanked the many donors who helped make the athletic complex a reality. In 2023, Governor Kelly awarded FHSU a University Challenge Grant of almost $2.4 million that required substantial commitment from private donors. The university had to raise three dollars in private support for every one grant dollar awarded through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).
Made possible through the generosity of loyal donors, the state-of-the-art facility represents a major investment in the success, health, and well-being of FHSU student-athletes by providing enhanced opportunities for training, conditioning, recovery, and rehabilitation.
“Those ARPA dollars through the University Challenge Grant gave us the runway, and our Tiger community gave us the lift,” said Mason. “That is the real story of this building. Not concrete and steel, but a community that refuses to let its student-athletes settle.”
Williamsport High School Opens New Millionaire Legacy Center
The new Millionaire Legacy Center was officially opened at the Williamsport Area High School's homecoming football game recently. Community members, school officials, students, contractors, and local government representatives gathered to celebrate the completion of the facility as part of the district's Homecoming festivities, according to information from the school district.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held prior to the game, marking the culmination of a construction project designed to create additional space for community events, student learning, and engagement.
"It is amazing to me what can be accomplished when a determined group of individuals come together and simply make it happen," said Dr. Timothy S. Bowers, superintendent.
"This project would not have been possible without the support of our Board of Directors, our architects, Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates, our contractors, Lobar, Inc., Hosler Enterprise, Silvertip, Inc., Turnkey Electric, Inc., and LIVIC Civil, as well as our project manager, Dale Crans," Bowers said.
