For some, the grunts and slams heard in a gym are simply part of the experience. For others, however, those noises can be a catalyst for confrontation.
That was the case for one Montreal-area gym member, who was caught on tape attacking another member for being too loud while deadlifting.
The Montreal Gazette reports that Charles-Antoine Lalonde, a 19-year-old member at a gym called Buzzfit, was in the middle of a deadlift rep when another member, visibly agitated, appeared to kick the bar from Lalonde’s hands. A shouting match ensued, and Lalonde was shoved nearly into a wall.
The incident was caught on camera because Lalonde was filming his set to share with his coach, Pete Rubish. Rubish posted video of the incident on his YouTube channel, where it had generated over 3 million views as of this writing. The video is embedded below, but be warned — it contains some course language.
Some members had reportedly complained about the noise. Lalonde placed mats underneath the weight plates to deaden the noise, but it wasn’t enough for his attacker.
The Gazette reports that man who attacked Lalonde has been barred from the gym. In addition, a staff member was suspended in connection to the incident.
Lalonde was reportedly offered a free year-long membership at another gym, where powerlifting is more common and less disruptive.
