California company Fitness International LLC, which operates the LA Fitness chain of health clubs, has purchased the old Sunrise Buick-Pontiac-GMC dealership in Collierville for $3.7 million, according to a public document filed with the Shelby County Register 's office.
The property at 1048 W. Poplar is vacant, and the fitness company would need town permits to occupy the existing building or build anything new, said Town Planner Jaime Groce. The company hasn't requested permits yet, he said.
The document confirming the $3.7 million sale bears dates from late December and was signed by Kenneth Forbert with Sunrise and William B. Horner, an executive with Irvine, Calif.-based Fitness International LLC.
Efforts to reach the two men weren't immediately successful Thursday.
The vacant dealership building stands in the middle of a big parking lot next to Chick-fil-A in a busy commercial strip in Collierville. It includes an empty office space plus a garage area that was used for servicing vehicles. A sign inside the window in the main part of the building says "Sunrise Chevrolet Buick Pontiac GMC HAS MOVED" and gives the new address on Houston Levee Road.
Sunrise's move to the site of the former Bill Heard Chevrolet property was announced in 2008.
The fitness company's website lists three existing clubs in the Memphis area: two in East Memphis and one in the Lakeland area.
