The membership of Hollyburn Country Club in West Vancouver, B.C., about 1,600 strong, wanted the planned addition to its natatorium to accommodate a leisure pool with various play features, but the building, located on a slope, wouldn't allow it.

Or, at least, it wouldn't allow for a standard leisure pool configuration. Stepped down four feet from the existing lap pool, the compact, 3,200-square-foot leisure pool takes the concept a few steps further. CEI Architecture of Vancouver minimized the zero-depth entry to the small slip at the left of the photo, allowing for an integrated splash pad and an 8-inch-deep wading area in place of the typically expansive beach. The two raised pads tip 1.5 and 1.2 percent, respectively, toward the pool, allowing for easy drainage into the pool's main body. Two short steps down from both these areas take bathers to roughly 12-inch-deep water on the way to a maximum depth of 36 inches at the far end of the pool.
