Two football players at Colorado State University have been suspended after they were caught spitting on their opponents during Saturday’s game against Boise State University.
According to The Sports Leader, quarterback Darius Curry and offensive lineman Liam Wortmann were both suspended and will not play in this week’s game between the Rams and Air Force.
The incident can be seen on video during the second half of Saturday’s football game when the Broncos attempted to recover a fumble that was later ruled an incomplete pass. Following the play, Curry “spat at Boise State pass rusher Jayden Virgin-Morgan,” after Morgan had given him “a one-handed shove.”
No penalty was called at the time, but Colorado State later called the actions unsportsmanlike.
"These actions are unacceptable. We are all regretful for what occurred last night, and on behalf of everyone at Colorado State, I want to apologize to the Boise State Football Student-Athletes, Director of Athletics Jeramiah Dickey, Coach Danielson and the entire Boise State Football program,” director of athletics John Weber said in a statement.
The Mountain West Conference reiterated Weber’s apology, and commended Colorado State for taking swift action in suspending Curry and Wortmann.
Curry himself posted an apology to X, saying, “What I did was unacceptable, disrespectful and completely against the values I’m expected to represent as a student-athlete. I also want to apologize to my Colorado State teammates, coaches and our fans. I let you down. I allowed my emotions to get the best of me, and I crossed a line that should never be crossed.”
“I want to apologize to the Boise State football players, Coach Danielson, and everyone at Boise State University,” said Interim Head Coach Tyson Summers in another statement.
Spencer Danielson, the head football coach at Boise State, did not report witnessing the incident, but he later spoke with game officials to understand what had transpired.
