Deep in the Canadian Northwoods, a community came together to donate food and raise funds for the local food bank all while enjoying a round of charity disc golf. The Dawson City Parks and Recreation Department in Yukon, Canada hosted the annual Ice Bowl Disc Golf Competition at the Crocus Bluff course, named in homage to the 1967 NFL Championship Game.

Competitors raised $500 and donated more than 40 pounds of food to the Dawson City Food Bank. It is a kind act on its own, but even more so considering the freezing temperatures of -46 C. According to the City of Dawson Facebook page, this Ice Bowl is the coldest on record.

The frigid temperatures did not put a stop to the fun. According to Yukon News, “Ice Bowl events are a globally recognized winter tradition going back to 1987.”

Ice Bowls across the world have a motto, "No wimps, no whiners." The events design one-of-a-kind discs for the competitions and take to the cold to raise money for a special cause. The special designs have ranged from ice-covered vikings, to large-antlered reindeer and even warrior polar bears.

The competition even attracted an international coalition, with some disc golfers arriving from the U.S. and one competitor traveling from Europe to compete. Yukon news reported that all who competed were “clad in extra winter garb to brace the frigid elements.”

Competitors paid a $30 entry fee, all of which went toward the food bank. The remaining funds were gathered from additional donations.
