The debate over whether referees and umpires should be treated as independent contractors or employees dates back decades, with no resolution in sight.

F41 908 Ab It has been five years, and Lisa Gill still remembers the day that a sports official filed for unemployment benefits from the Eau Claire (Wis.) Indoor Sports Center. At the time, she was the facility's executive director, paying that part-time official $2 per game to assign referees and up to an additional $20 per game to officiate. When the individual was laid off from his full-time job, he listed the facility as a source of income.
