Eight N.Y. Football Programs to Merge into Two Teams

Courtney Cameron

High school football in the city of Yonkers, N.Y. is facing a monumental change after eight separate high schools voted this week, approving a merger into two comprehensive programs.

The merger is now under consideration by Section 1. Approval by the organization’s athletic council (meeting Nov. 21) and its executive committee (meeting Nov. 27) will make the move official.

District spokesperson Jerilynne Fierstein told USA Today, “It is with Section 1 now.”

The district’s proposal, sent last month to Section 1, cited insufficient participation, budget cuts, and an inability to compete against other league schools as motivation behind the merger.
