A sports camp in San Diego allows kids with diabetes a chance to practice preferred sports alongside professional and collegiate athletes.
The inaugural diabetes sports came was held at a San Diego Wave FC facility in Del Mar and began with a pep talk from Wave FC president Jill Ellis who encouraged players to approach their drills with enthusiasm.
All participants have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, as have all of the collegiate and professional athletes who helped with the event.
“You have these goals and these aspirations to play professional sports, but you don’t know if that’s going to be the outcome for you,” Blake Ferguson, a professional football player, told NBC 7.
Ferguson said that he remembers searching the internet for other professional athletes who had been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes after his initial diagnosis.
“Whether it’s being an athlete, a musician, a lawyer, a doctor, whatever it is, there is nothing about diabetes that can stop them from being great at whatever they want to do,” Ferguson said.
