Michigan Passes Concussion Protocol Update

Courtney Cameron Headshot

As the concerns about head injuries continue to swirl around youth sports, legislatures are taking a look at concussion protocols at the state level.

A bill has advanced through the Michigan legislature that would require all coaches and staff involved with youth sports to complete a concussion awareness training minimally once every three years, according to the Daily Tribune.

Pending the signature of Governor Rick Snyder, the new legislation will update concussion laws passed in Michigan in 2012 requiring concussion protocol for youth athletes and a one-time awareness program for all coaches, staff and volunteers.

The new legislation requires concussion awareness training to be completed once every three years unless the State Department of Health and Human Services recommends it more frequently, which puts the training program in subjection to periodic reviews by the state.
