A group of wrestling coaches in Ohio reacted appropriately and saved the life of a student-athlete who collapsed during a team practice last week.
According to USA Today, wrestling coaches at St. Edward High School in Lakewood, Ohio, led by assistant coach Mark Jayne, were able to resuscitate a player who collapsed during practice.
Jayne is a health teacher at St. Edward. He certifies students, faculty and staff in CPR. Jayne used an AED unit to revive the player, who was later transported to the hospital to have a pacemaker installed.
The student is back home and expected to make a full recovery.
βYou canβt assume someone else is going to do something,β Jayne said. βThereβs something called bystander effect: the more people there are, the more likely it is you assume someone else is going to do it. So, itβs important you make sure you point at someone, βyou call 911, you get the AED,β and donβt assume someone else knows what theyβre doing just because theyβre there.β
