Prime Fitness & Beauty: The Difference Is in the Details

"Are there fitness clubs like this in the United States?" So asked Francesco Iezzoni through an interpreter this morning as we toured the nearly two-year-old location of Prime, in a mall development outside Castel Maggiore (the club's other location is in the center of nearby Bologna). Yes, high-end clubs such as this exist, with many of the same components. But few U.S. clubs exhibit the aesthetic styling on display here in details large and small. Eschewing the elevator, we climbed two staircases to the entry lobby and immediately got a hint of the club's layout through the length of glass inset into the resin lobby floor, which crosses in front of the welcome desk and intersects one of the sales offices. Both the blue light in the floor cutout and its narrow view into the pool space were motifs duplicated in other areas of the club, from the vertical mirrored strips in the wall of the group exercise room to the orange lighting emanating from the side panels of "end tables" separating pieces of cardio equipment in the fitness area.

Purchasing Parts for Strength Equipment

The frame of the seated leg curl machine was covered by a lifetime warranty, and when it succumbed to wear and broke the first time, the manufacturer shipped out a new one at no charge. (Not wanting to jeopardize a longtime relationship with this particular vendor, the club owner prefers that all names, personal or company, be withheld.)

Presidential Physical Fitness Test to Be Replaced in 2014

School-based fitness programs will enter a new era in 2014, when a new assessment called the Presidential Youth Fitness Program replaces the 24-year-old Physical Fitness Test. A partnership between the President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition; the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance; the Amateur Athletic Union; The Cooper Institute; and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Presidential Youth Fitness Program will emphasize health over performance and will use FITNESSGRAM® - a Cooper Institute program that promotes lifelong physical activity via a variety of health-related physical fitness tests that assess aerobic capacity, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and body composition.

Group Fitness Classes Top Trends in SGMA Report

The fitness industry is on the upswing, according to the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association's 2012 edition of Tracking the Fitness Movement, which monitors at-home and health club fitness trends. Topping the list of fastest-growing trends among health club members are class-based activities such as yoga, high-impact aerobics, cardio kickboxing and stationary cycling, which accounted for five of the top ten.

Blog: Where Cardio Consoles Will Take Users

The display on a piece of cardio equipment is the machine's face - and, very often, its handshake. For years, stepping on a piece of equipment meant making that first-time introduction over and over, notes Adam Hubbard, director of product management at Woodinville, Wash.-based Precor. "I use the analogy of the arcade experience," he says. "If you think back to the '80s, you dropped your quarter into an arcade game, and it didn't know who you were. Everyone was delivered the same experience. And when your quarter was up, it reset. Move that over into the fitness world - well, every time you work out, if you really want a more accurate calorie count, you have to tell it your age, and if you want more accurate heart rate information, you tell it your age and weight, and so forth. As soon as that workout's over, it's all gone. But with our new products, we can move beyond that, where we start to personalize the experience for each user."
