A pair of Retro Fitness locations in Jacksonville, Fla., abruptly shut down over the weekend with no notice given to members or employees.

Action News Jax reports that the two locations, franchised by former Jacksonville Jaguars player David Garrard, had signs posted on the doors reading: “As a consequence of unsustainable and continuing financial losses, these gyms are closed.”

The news caught employees by surprise.

“Any kind of notice would have been nice,” Rose Daniel, the fitness director at one of the gyms, told Action News Jax. “I’m a single mom of a five-year-old who’s also expecting her second child. So, to not have an income in a blink of an eye, yeah, it sucks.”

As for members, a spokesperson told Action News Jax that all of their contracts had been cancelled.

Garrard, who quarterbacked the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2002-10, offered no comment on the club closures.
