Arlington, Texas, is preparing for a grand opening of the ACTIV, the city's new 73,000-square-feet recreation center for adults ages 50 and older.

The state-of-the-art facility, approved by Arlington voters in a special bond election in May 2017, will provide indoor and outdoor programming for adults ages 50 and older.

Amenities include a full-court gymnasium, an indoor lap pool and an indoor hydrotherapy pool, four pickleball courts, a fitness area and a walking track. Social amenities will include a lounge with billiards, a special events space, arts and crafts room and more. Outdoor amenities will include a patio, outdoor walking trails, six pickleball courts, and a community garden. [Arlington]

One of Horry County's fastest-growing communities could get a YMCA that includes a natatorium with an Olympic-sized pool.

Carolina Forest, a suburban area between Myrtle Beach and Conway, could have a new Y building by the end of the decade, the organization's leaders confirmed this month. The facility would be built near the intersection of Augusta Plantation Drive and River Oaks Drive.

"Every community deserves YMCA services," Coastal Carolina YMCA CEO David Byrd told the Carolina Forest Civic Association last week.

A timeline for construction and an exact budget remain question marks. Byrd also cautioned that he doesn't want a new Y to compete with existing community centers in the area.

The YMCA would be built on land that Tidelands Health already owns. The healthcare provider has plans for a separate facility on the property. The proposed YMCA would operate seven days a week and share parking with the Tidelands building. [The Post and Courier]

A historic Baltimore recreation center is going through a multi-million-dollar renovation while honoring its prominent past.

The Chick Webb Memorial Recreation Center and Pool, which was the first to be built for African Americans in segregated East Baltimore, is getting an upgrade to provide equitable access to much-needed health and wellness programs for all generations.

"Chick Webb Center played an important part in our coming up," East Baltimore resident Alvin Webb said. [CBS News]
