Purdue Celebrates Opening of Pickett-Chaney Pickleball and Tennis Complex

Purdue University students now have access to the Pickett-Chaney Pickleball and Tennis Complex, a new outdoor facility named in honor of two families with deep ties to Purdue. The complex bears the names of Martin and Janice Pickett and Jean Anne “Jeannie” and James Chaney, whose support made the project possible.

Purdue Recreation & Wellness (RecWell), which oversees recreational facilities and programming across campus, took a leadership role in the project to expand and resurface 18 pickleball courts.  The courts are individually fenced, including three championship-sized courts. The newly named complex also features two individually fenced tennis courts.

The athletic facility also includes a social space where students can connect, watch friends play and study.

“It ensures paddle and racket sports remain accessible and thriving for faculty, staff and students for years to come,” said Beth McCuskey, Purdue’s vice provost for student life. “By incorporating the new complex with the adjacent intramural fields, we’ll be able to encourage students to balance long hours of studying and screen time with outdoor recreation. Pickleball is a great way to build friendships too!”

Henderson Plans Indoor Sports Complex at Site of Long-Vacant Fiesta Casino

Henderson city leaders and a developer have announced plans to transform the long-vacant Fiesta Casino site into a major multipurpose indoor sports complex and hotel.

Agora Realty and Management Incorporated plans to purchase the 35-acre site for $30 million — roughly the same amount the city paid for it in 2022. The next step is a public hearing on the purchase and sale agreement and development agreement.

The proposed development would include a fieldhouse, welcome center, batting cages, a 145-room hotel, offices, and multiple retail spaces. One retail space is planned to include a restaurant, a retail goods store, and a medical center.

Inside the sports complex, there would be more than 2 dozen basketball courts, volleyball courts, and batting cages combined, along with a multipurpose field for a half-dozen outdoor sports.

Des Plaines to Renovate YMCA for New Private Athletic Center

A $22 million deal to renovate a dilapidated former YMCA facility in Des Plaines and reopen it as a private athletic center should be finalized early next week.

The Des Plaines City Council on Tuesday is expected to approve an economic incentive and development agreement for the former Lattof YMCA, 300 E. Northwest Highway. The pact would be between the city, which purchased the roughly 4-acre site earlier this year for about $1.9 million, and SG Des Plaines and Spectate Group.

SG and Spectate are subsidiaries of the Mount Prospect-based Nicholas Family of Companies, which operates facilities including the Nicholas Sportsplex in Mount Prospect and the Rosemont Ice Arena.
