In a letter to the campus community, University of California-Berkeley Chancellor Carol Christ announced plans to build new facilities for the school’s women’s softball and beach volleyball programs. The letter suggested that the school has a moral and legal obligation under Title IX to provide high-quality facilities to these programs, and that their projected total cost would be approximately $30 million. Improvements coming to the softball facility include flipping the field’s orientation and enlarging the facility. It will see expanded seating, covered batting cages, locker rooms, a video board, field lighting and an elevated press box. The softball facility will meet dimensional requirements, allowing the school to hold NCAA tournament games. The beach volleyball facility will feature four sand courts, permanent spectator seating and a scoreboard. — CalBears.com

Coachella Sports and Entertainment Stadium Authority announced plans to build a $300 million, 12,000-seat stadium in Thousand Palms, Calif. The development, which would also feature retail, a hotel, medical facilities and a senior living community, is aimed at bringing youth sports to the area. Dubbed The Shield at 1Coyote Way, the project is targeting 2021 for completion. — Desert Sun
