The Milwaukee Brewers’ president and general manager will be among the speakers at Thursday’s groundbreaking ceremony for the new Mudcats stadium.

The public is invited to the city’s 10 a.m. event that will be held near 316 Douglas St. in the building where city residents got their first glimpse at the stadium’s design.

In December, the Wilson City Council voted unanimously to seek $69 million in bond financing through the N.C. Local Government Commission to build the stadium adjacent to the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park. The first phase of construction, including the stadium and its amenities, is scheduled for completion on or before April 1, 2026, opening day for the Mudcats’ inaugural season in Wilson. The Mudcats are an affiliate of the Brewers.

The stadium will include 3,500 fixed seats with a total capacity of 4,500 on game day. It also will feature 10-12 suites, a ballpark club and banquet facility to accommodate up to 250 guests, food and beverage services, guest support facilities, artificial turf on the playing field, a kids’ play area and a 360-degree concourse around the roughly 6-acre ballpark. A new VIP space at Little Caesars Arena will cater to concertgoers seeking an upscale show experience.

Encore Lounge, situated by the Detroit Red Wings practice rink, is touting “elevated culinary offerings and season fare, and a members-only service bar,” as described in a media release from 313 Presents.

Membership includes premium seating for shows. Patrons will also receive private parking in the Trinity Health Garage next to the arena, in spaces typically used by Red Wings players. [Detroit Free Press]

Student athletes on Monday, April 29, joined guests and staff to celebrate the completion of updates to the Kirkwood High School athletic field, including the Frank Czapla Field (soccer), the field hockey/lacrosse field, the Jim Scott Baseball and Softball Complex, and a track and field throwing arena.

The project, funded through operating reserves, Prop I reserves and $300,000 in private donations, replaced the school’s natural grass fields with artificial turf, and also included grading, improving drainage, fencing work and adding ADA-accessible bleachers at the baseball/softball field. The new surfaces will save the district about $60,000 a year on maintenance. [Webster-Kirkwood Times]
