University leaders, core project donors and key stakeholders in Athletics and Physical Education celebrated the kickoff of the Meinig Fieldhouse project Oct. 19 with a groundbreaking ceremony as part of Cornell’s Trustee-Council Annual Meeting weekend.
“Athletics, physical education and health are absolutely core priorities for Cornell,” said Interim President Michael I. Kotlikoff. “So when this project emerged, it wasn’t a question of if we should do it, but a question of how we would do it.”
The $68.7 million project includes the construction of both Meinig Fieldhouse, named in honor of the late Peter C. Meinig ’61, former chairman of the Cornell Board of Trustees, as well as a separate outdoor turf field. Both will be located on Tower Road. The project also includes relocating Cornell’s field hockey facility to the Game Farm Road complex. Construction on the fieldhouse is slated to commence in November. [Cornell]
Ten years after a formal plan was established, Laramie County Community College (LCCC) hosted its grand opening for the Blue Federal Credit Union Recreation and Athletics Complex.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony included speeches by the LCCC President, Joe Shaffer, Athletic Director, Mark Puev, state legislators, sponsors, Trustees, students, athletes and community members. For Puev, this opening was 839 days in the making from when he took over as athletic director.
“This is one of the oldest buildings that has not been renovated on campus,” Puev said. “The former gym, if you packed people in like sardines, it's a little bit over 500 was capacity. You now have 1,101. It's just this has now become the premier indoor facility in Region Nine.” [Wyoming News Now]

Borger’s planned $100 million sports complex moved one step closer to reality as the city approved the scope of work for the pre-construction phase.
The Borger City Council approved the economic development corporation’s payment of $100,000 to 8:28 Sports Development Group.
The design phase has been completed and 8:28 Sports Development’s architect gave a presentation at today’s meeting which included the addition of a grocery store, apartments and condos.
“Today they don’t just have to just hear us talk anymore, they were able to see a visual presentation of what this actually can look like once it’s completed. I think everyone’s excited about that, we’re excited about that and it seems that everybody was kind of pleased with what they’ve seen,” said Jeff Williams Sr., head of design and development at 8:28 Sports Development Group. “So we’re just excited we’re moving forward to the next phase, which will be our pre-construction phase.” [KFDA]
