Construction for New York City's first professional soccer-specific stadium has officially broken ground on Wednesday, marking a significant moment in Mayor Eric Adams' Willet Point transformation project that promises new jobs and affordable housing.

The 25,000-seat stadium is expected to be operational by the 2027 Major League Soccer season. Once it opens, the arena will become the new home of the New York City Football Club and the first fully-electric stadium across the nation.

The stadium will also be New York City's first professional soccer-specific stadium.

The $780 million stadium is part of the Willets Point redevelopment, which according to supporters will deliver 15,000 good-paying jobs, 2,500 units of affordable housing, over 40,000 square feet of new public space and 650 school seats. [4 New York]

A new sports hub is coming to Wilmington.

The Olsen Farm Recreation Village will be home to the Wilmington Aquatic Center (WAC) and ACCESS Inclusive Recreation Center, according to a news release from ACCESS of Wilmington.

The WAC will feature indoor and outdoor Olympic-sized pools, which will offer swim lessons for all ages and abilities, including lifeguard, first responder and military training. The center will also host therapeutic, recreational and competitive swim programs.

“By providing space where everyone can learn water safety, build confidence and discover the joy of swimming, the WAC can save lives and create an opportunity for athletes of all levels to reach their potential right here at home,” said Olympic gold and silver medalist Kathleen Baker. Carmel High School’s newly expanded natatorium and renovated pool facilities now provide a state-of-the-art complex designed to support students, the community and high-level competitive swimming. The new natatorium significantly increases the available water surface, accommodating the growing demand for swimming programs in the Carmel area.

Ahead of the official grand opening, I had the opportunity to speak with Jim Inskeep, Director of Athletics and Activities at Carmel High School, about the new features in the school’s expanded natatorium. He shared his excitement about how the upgrades will enhance the experience for swim teams, staff and spectators for many years to come. With its advanced facilities, the complex is set to become a cornerstone for both athletic and community events, reflecting Carmel’s commitment to excellence in sports and wellness.[Carmel Monthly Magazine]
