San Francisco Opens New Hertz Recreation Center

The new Herz Recreation Center has opened in San Francisco, marking the city’s first recreation center built from the ground up in more than 25 years, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department announced.

The 11,500-square-foot facility, located within Herz Playground in John McLaren Park, serves residents of the Sunnydale and Visitacion Valley neighborhoods.

It includes a full-size basketball court with seating for 200, a multipurpose room for classes and events, offices, a kitchen, and a community space designed for all ages.

The project also added new pathways connecting the playground to nearby community facilities, along with outdoor amenities such as a fitness terrace, picnic areas, and landscaped open space.

City of Lenoir Commits to Aquatics Center Renovation

The renovation is part of the City's most recent Parks & Recreation Trust Fund grant. The North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund (PARTF) awards matching grants to local governments for parks, public beach access, and improvements in state parks. The program helps local governments improve the quality of life in their communities.

The renovations at the aquatic center will include:

  • hallway from the main entrance to the racquetball court corridor
  • full-view glass doors to the racquetball courts
  • family locker room
  • family restroom
  • employee break room
  • shower dividers in the men's locker room
  • new lockers in the men's and women's locker rooms
  • new stall dividers in locker rooms
  • new flooring
  • new LED lighting in the building
  • new sinks in the locker rooms and restrooms
  • new toilets in the restrooms
  • six-person hot tub located on the deck of the indoor pool
  • refurbishing the outdoor pool slides

All of the new improvements will be ADA compliant.

In August, City Council approved the final project budget and hired J.M. Cope Construction to do the work. The project budget is $999,950 plus in-kind contributions from City staff. The City is funding the project with the $500,000 PART grant, $590,375 from American Recovery Plan Act funds, and $269,710 of City of Lenoir funds.

Crossroads Academy Hosts Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for New Gym

The days of not having a gym to play home games in ended Monday for the Crossroad Academy boys basketball team, as the Gadsden County school held a ribbon cutting ceremony for their brand new gym.

The Scorpions have consistently been one of the Big Bend’s best teams, and because of that, the vision to build a new gym came in 2013.

An idea 13 years in the making, is now a reality, and Crossroad excited to finally have true homecourt advantage.

“We’ve been waiting for this moment,” said junior Farlun Dudley. “There’s no better moment than now. We’re forever grateful for our staff and our teachers and our principal. We’re forever grateful for everyone.”
