Pell City Schools Reveals Plans for New Athletics Complex

The Pell City School Board officially approved the next steps in its plan for two new state-of-the-art facilities for education and athletics.

During a board meeting Tuesday night, the school system announced a new partnership with the city to “reimagine educational facilities, marking a major investment in the future of our students and community.”

The two major projects include:

  • Panther Performance Complex
  • Career and Technical Education (CTE) Facility

The joint effort from the city and the school system was made possible by voters in the 2024 election, which created Pell City Schools and separated it from St. Clair County Schools.

Granby, Colo., Plans New Rec Center

The Town of Granby has not yet committed to building a new recreation center, but officials explored cost and feature options as part of an ongoing Parks and Recreation Master Plan update at a Jan. 27 Board of Trustees meeting.

Consultants from Norris Design presented updated community feedback, preliminary design concepts and cost estimates for two versions of the recreation center. No final decision was made at the meeting, but board members and staff signaled interest in further analysis — particularly of a third option: a smaller, “dry” recreation center that would not initially include a pool.

Construction on the proposed recreation center would begin in March 2028 and the center would be operational by March 2030, according to the presentation.

Coralville, Iowa, Kicks Off Work on New $54M Rec Center

Coralville kicked off work on its new recreation center by awarding a multi-million dollar design contract to an Iowa City-based design firm, but failed to decide who would lead the project.

The new recreation facility will be built just east of the existing, 50-year-old recreation building. The total project cost is estimated at around $54 million, which includes about $48 million for the building itself.

The city is expected to use bonds to finance the project and will repay the loan with revenue from the city's 1% local option sales tax revenue.

The Coralville City Council unanimously selected Neumann Monson Architects during its meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 27 to help design and provide "architectural services" for the city's planned recreation center and natatorium. The almost $4.7 million agreement will also include subcontracting consultants for the pool design, landscaping, acoustics and more.
