Indiana Senate Clears Funding for New Bears Stadium
The Indiana State Senate this week approved a bill to fund a potential stadium for the Chicago Bears in the state.
The legislation creates a Northwest Indiana Stadium Authority, which could finance and build an NFL stadium in Northwest Indiana.
The bill passed the Indiana State Senate by a vote of 46-2 on Wednesday. It now must be voted upon by the Indiana State House of Representatives.
The bill would require the Bears to enter into a lease of at least 35 years. The Bears would pay for repairs and operational costs, but also keep all the operating revenue generated by the stadium. The team also would have the option to buy the stadium for $1 at the end of the lease.
Benzie County Plans New Wellness Center
A major new wellness and aquatic center could soon be coming to Benzie County, bringing indoor pools, fitness space, and year-round recreation opportunities to a community with limited indoor options.
Organizers say the Benzie Wellness and Aquatic Center has been a long-time goal for the region and is designed to serve residents of all ages and abilities. Plans include space for aquatics programming, wellness and fitness classes, and an indoor walking track — something supporters say could especially benefit seniors during the winter months.
Leaders behind the project say the facility would help fill gaps in recreation, health, and community programming, while also creating a central hub where residents can connect and stay active year-round.
Bend Parks and Rec Mulls Future Facilities Projects
The Bend Park & Recreation District is looking a decade down the road at three major indoor recreation projects — and asking how much the community is willing to invest to keep pace with growth.
That question was the focus of a wide-ranging board discussion Jan. 20, as district leaders reviewed feasibility studies for a westside aquatic and fitness center, a year-round indoor ice rink and a standalone indoor athletic center. While all three address documented community needs, each comes with construction costs that vary widely depending on the size of each building. The district also need to consider operating costs, which may include long-term subsidies.
