Court Ruling Gives Oklahoma Go Ahead to Build New Arena
OU and the city of Norman are finally ready to start building a new arena.
The Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled in favor of the school and city on Tuesday after years of legal battles. OU and the city announced in 2024 their intentions of building a $1.2 billion entertainment district in Rock Creek that would include a nearly $330 million arena, which would succeed the Lloyd Noble Center. Since then, both the school and the city have been involved in multiple legal battles.
The latest, and expected to be final, battle was when residents of Norman filed a petition to take the arena to a public vote. That petition received 11,602 signatures over 30 days. But on Tuesday, the Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled that the petition was insufficient, allowing the project to move forward.
Grand Rapids, Mich., Opens New $19.5M Recreation Center
For years, Grand Rapids residents have been asking the city to replace an aging, cramped park lodge on the southeast side with a bigger, more inviting community center where residents of all ages could gather for recreation and exercise.
This month, residents will finally see their wishes come to life at the new $19.7 million Martin Luther King Park Lodge, a nearly 25,000-square-foot facility opening to the public Saturday, Feb. 21, at 900 Fuller Ave. SE.
City officials say the new facility is the first of its kind in Grand Rapids, offering a free gathering space for the community with fitness classes, a full-size gymnasium for basketball and pickleball, and a rentable “banquet-style” event space that can hold up to 200 people.
