SMU’s $15M Rec Center Renovation to Include Spin, Yoga Spaces

Future students at SMU can expect an updated recreation center to be completed in 2028.

The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation reported that the school registered a $15 million renovation for the SMU Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports on Monday. The privately funded project will renovate 56,000 square feet of the facility, focusing on updating its fitness areas, including the spin and yoga studios, weight room, showers, locker rooms, and mechanical equipment.

The school's $25-million expansion of the facility in 2005 tripled its size with the help of a tuition fee increase over a two-year period. The 165,000-square-foot expansion included a climbing wall, a cardio machine overlook space, lounge areas, a cafe, a multipurpose court for indoor soccer and floor hockey, and both outdoor and indoor pools and locker rooms. It was one of the last major universities in Texas to update its recreational center.

Torrey Pines High School Gets First Pool

After decades of having to travel off-campus for practices and competitions, aquatics athletes in the San Dieguito Union High School District finally have a pool to call home at Torrey Pines High School.

On Tuesday morning, district leaders and community members celebrated the opening of the long-awaited aquatics center, approved by the district board in 2024 for just under $20 million. The center will be used for the district’s water polo, swimming, and diving teams, starting with those from Torrey Pines and Canyon Crest Academy.

District Superintendent Anne Staffieri said this moment has been 88 years in the making and follows advocacy from countless athletes, families, coaches, and officials.

Harwich Gets Indoor Baseball Facility

Outside, frozen snowbanks tower above sidewalks, streets and parking lots. Grassy surfaces at parks and fields are smothered in expansive sheets of white that show no signs of melting. In less than two months, baseball will be played outdoors here.

Until then, the sport survives on the Lower Cape inside a Harwich warehouse situated among an industrial section of Queen Anne Road. Tucked at the back of that warehouse is the Cape Cod Baseball Club, which opened at the end of January and with it brought an indoor baseball training facility to the region. Before, the closest places to practice the game inside were all on the Upper Cape.

“The word ‘finally’ seems to be a common word I hear,” owner Steve Almonte said. “Finally. Finally a baseball training center in the Lower Cape. Finally.”
