Brooklyn's Chisholm Recreation Center Officially Opens Its Doors
Brooklyn’s largest recreation center officially opened its doors in East Flatbush this week. Located within Nostrand Playground, the Shirley Chisholm Recreation Center measures 74,000 square feet and includes an indoor pool, basketball court, full gym, a media lab, outdoor spaces, and more. Designed by Studio Gang, the firm behind the Gilder Center at the Museum of Natural History and Brooklyn residential tower 11 Hoyt, the building features large arched windows, a curving brick facade, and a green roof.
Former Mayor Bill de Blasio first announced plans for the new $141 million facility in 2020 and construction began in 2023. The rec center is named after Shirley Chisholm, a Brooklyn-born activist and politician who became the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress.
According to the city, the new center is the first of its kind in Central Brooklyn and the first built citywide in the last 15 years. Roughly 41,000 people live a 15-minute walk or transit ride from the facility.
Orlando Begins $400M Renovation of Camping World Stadium
Orlando is once again in the national spotlight as bowl season continues in Central Florida.
Thousands of fans are downtown this weekend for the Pop-Tarts Bowl, but beyond the excitement on the field, a major renovation at Camping World Stadium is also on the horizon. The project is expected to make Orlando even more attractive for major sporting events in the future.
Camping World Stadium has long been a destination for major sports and entertainment events, drawing visitors from across the country and around the world.
“We like being in Orlando. This is where I went to college and grew up,” said Sinbad Elhaddad, who runs Sinbad Sports, a sports memorabilia shop based in Fort Lauderdale. He and his team set up pop-up shops outside Camping World Stadium on game days.
Mount Pleasant Celebrates Opening of New Baseball Fields
The Town of Mount Pleasant will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday to celebrate the completion of the new Cario Baseball Field.
The project includes an artificial turf baseball field with dugouts, sports lighting, and a restroom facility. The field sits on town-owned property next to Cario Middle School.
