University of South Florida CEO of athletics Rob Higgins today announced plans for a six-court beach volleyball facility to be constructed within the current Tampa General Hospital Athletics District on the Tampa campus.
"We are very excited for the debut season of our beach volleyball program under head coach Pri Piantadosi-Lima, which begins this week, and thrilled to be able to add to that excitement by announcing plans for a new beach volleyball facility that will begin hosting competition on our campus next season," Higgins said. "Through a combination of University and private funding, we look forward to providing our student-athletes, coaches and fans with an excellent competition and practice facility within the footprint of our Athletics District that will be the home of USF beach volleyball and play an integral role in the future success of our student-athletes and program."
D.C. Breaks Ground on $225M Rec Center
D.C.’s Ward 8 is getting a new recreation center, one that received both praise and criticism during a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday.
Director of the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation Thennie Freeman began her remarks at the event for the new Douglass Community Center by exhorting the crowd to, “Wake up, Ward 8! Shake your shoulders. We’re talking about a brand new recreation facility and pool coming to this site right here!”
“Fun fact: This pool will mean number eight in Ward 8 — the largest amount of pools in any ward,” Freeman added.
The $225 million facility slated for completion in 2027 will include a splash park, pool, media center and a fitness center, as well as a community garden space.
Florida Poly Opens New Esports Arena
Florida Polytechnic University opened its brand-new esports arena on campus, which is not just about having fun and gaming competitively, it's also about preparing students for their own careers.
Its hard to find colleges and universities without an esports team. It's a major market that makes more than a billion dollars annually.
"When you go into that job field, you'll either have a team you'll manage or a manger who will manage you and the rest of your colleagues," said Janice Rivera, who is studying computer science and cybersecurity. "You need to work with them. In our games, we'll be looking for one another, and I think that translates really well to the workforce."
