Breaking Ground

Construction is now underway on the University of South Carolina’s Williams-Brice Stadium Reimagination project. Phase 1 of the project will be the renovation of the general concourses and the student section, which will be completed by the start of the 2026 football season. Early construction includes key demolition work across several areas of the stadium, but the broader project will see new premium areas, expanded amenities and additional improvements designed to elevate the fan experience.

Columbus (Ga.) State University broke ground on a new golf clubhouse. The $3.2 million, 6,447-square-foot facility will enhance the existing Key Golf Studio by adding championship-caliber indoor practice technology and outdoor playing surfaces — additions that coaches say will help boost team competitiveness and bolster student-athlete recruitment and retention.

First Pitch

The University of New Mexico has released the initial findings of its ongoing feasibility and development planning effort to modernize University Stadium and advance long-term development of the South Campus Sports and Entertainment District. The findings outline a phased approach, beginning with a proposed $58 million improvement package focused on high-impact, foundational upgrades designed to address the most urgent infrastructure, accessibility, fan experience and safety needs.

Michigan State announced the FOR SPARTA initiative, a $1 billion facilities improvement roadmap that will include enhancements to sporting venues, including Spartan Stadium, the Breslin Center and Jenison Fieldhouse. The FOR SPARTA program is expected to run through 2035, and the university has already raised $250 million toward its $1 billion goal.

Grand Openings

The new Herz Recreation Center has opened in San Francisco, marking the city’s first recreation center built from the ground up in more than 25 years. The 11,500-square-foot facility, located within Herz Playground in John McLaren Park, includes a full-size basketball court with seating for 200, a multipurpose room for classes and events, offices, a kitchen and a community space designed for all ages.

The University of Utah cut the ribbon on Charlie Monfort Field at America First Ballpark, which brings baseball practice, training and gameday programs to one site. In addition to the field itself, the team locker room, film room, lounge, weight room, equipment room, sports medicine suite, coaches’ offices and more are all under one roof. Directly adjacent to the field surface is an indoor training facility with hitting tunnels and a pitching lab. Many of these spaces were previously spread across campus and the city, and were not as extensive.

The San Dieguito Union High School District in Encinitas, Calif., held a ribbon-cutting for a new aquatics center at Torrey Pines High School. District leaders and community members celebrated the opening of the long-awaited facility, approved by the district board in 2024 for just under $20 million. The center will be used for the district’s water polo, swimming and diving teams, starting with those from Torrey Pines and Canyon Crest Academy.
