Oklahoma Breaks Ground on $1B Mixed-Use Sports and Entertainment District

Oklahoma's vision of a new stadium in Norman took a pivotal step toward becoming a reality Tuesday morning.

The university and the City of Norman broke ground on the Rock Creek Entertainment District, the planned $1.2 billion project that includes a new multipurpose 8,000-seat arena that will serve as the new home of Sooners men's and women's basketball, as well as women's gymnastics.

The Rock Creek Entertainment District is set to be located at Rock Creek Road and 24th Ave Northwest, between I-35 and Max Westheimer Airport in Norman.

Georgia Tech Opens $90M Thomas A. Fanning Student-Athlete Performance Center

Culminating nearly a decade of planning and two-and-a-half years of construction, Georgia Tech officially opened the Thomas A. Fanning Student-Athlete Performance Center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday.

Located in the northeast corner of Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field, the Fanning Center totals in excess of 100,000 square feet. It features state-of-the-art spaces dedicated to strength and conditioning, sports medicine and nutrition, as well as Georgia Tech’s first-ever sports science lab, that will benefit student-athletes across the Yellow Jackets’ 17 sports. It also includes expanded and enhanced meeting and office space that is exclusive to Tech football.

University System of Georgia Chancellor Sonny Perdue, Georgia Tech President Ángel Cabrera, Tech vice president and director of athletics Ryan Alpert, student-athletes Henry Gibbs (men’s swimming and diving) and Alejandra Cruz (women’s tennis) and the facility’s namesake, Dr. Thomas A. Fanning, were featured speakers at Thursday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony.

WKU to Renovate Track and Field Complex

WKU Athletics will renovate the Charles M. Ruter Track and Field Complex, the home of the WKU Cross Country and Track and Field programs, this summer.

"Since 2014, we have invested over $75 million into either new or renovated athletics facilities, but had not been able to address the track surface until now," WKU Director of Athletic Todd Stewart said. "Our track, which was installed in 2008, needs to be improved and I applaud the Hilltopper Athletic Foundation for providing the monetary support for these much-needed improvements and elevating our track program's competition area to the level our other sport programs enjoy."

The existing track surface will be demoed and a new urethane track will be installed. The track will be gray with red exchange zones, and the new surface will include all markings to meet NCAA qualifications. The project will be completed by GeoSurfaces.
