Oakland Holds Grand Opening for New Mosswood Recreation Center

Destroyed by fire a decade ago, the Mosswood Recreation Center will reopen to the public on Saturday morning.

Mayor Barbara Lee, Councilmember Carroll Fife, and other officials will speak and offer tours to community members from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The 2016 blaze at the center put an immediate halt to preschool, arts, cooking, and inclusion programs held at the facility, which first opened in 1953. Many of those programs were relocated to temporary structures, but park visitors have eagerly awaited the redevelopment of the full center.

The new, two-story facility has a social hall, classrooms, a kitchen, a computer lab, a “maker space,” and a terrace. San Francisco-based Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects designed the center and Oakland’s Einwiller Kuehl is responsible for the landscape architecture. At 12,300 square feet, it’s larger than the previous building.

New Indoor Soccer Training Facility Under Construction in Springfield

A large indoor soccer training facility has been proposed for a vacant building on Port Royal Road in Springfield.

The Board of Zoning Appeals has scheduled a hearing on July 22 for a special permit for the project. The site is zoned for industrial uses.

Capstone Soccer would be located at 5256 Port Royal Road. An NTW tire store closed at that site about five years ago.

The facility would be used for an instructional soccer training facility providing structured, small-group and individual coaching sessions for children and youths, according to the statement of justification submitted to the Fairfax County Planning and Land Use System.

The Athletics Department recently announced a partnership with Barton Malow and March-Westin to serve as construction managers on the project, tentatively set to begin following the conclusion of the 2026 football season.

The new tower is expected to secure the future of Milan Puskar Stadium by enhancing it with additional premium seating that will put the venue on par with its Big 12 peers.
