Thornton Academy Completes $14.5M Field House
Spanning close to 49,000 square feet, Thornton Academy’s new Miles Field House is a commanding presence at the center of the Saco school’s 80-acre campus. It’s even more striking on the inside.
Yarmouth-based architect William Harke and New York-based Labella Associates, working with Thornton’s facilities director, Matthew Cook, made optimal use of the space, to create a multipurpose sports facility.
The building boasts a center basketball court — with a $160,000 removable floor, which can be disassembled and stored when not in use, to protect the surface.
Flanking both sides of the main court are two additional full courts, lined for volleyball, basketball and tennis. A flexible “curtain” can descend from the ceiling to wall off the courts so that three events can be hosted concurrently.
Village of Lewiston Moves Forward With Plans for New Rec Center
Not only is the Village of Lewiston moving forward with plans to build a recreation center, but trustees have taken one of the main stumbling blocks out of the equation. At Monday's public forum, they will unveil designs to build a 36,000-square-foot complex at the Lewiston plateau -- not behind the Red Brick.
A working image of the rec center is shown at left.
At two previous Village Board meetings, opponents of the rec center vented their dissatisfaction with the original plan, which called for a 28,000-square-foot indoor sports facility behind the Red Brick Municipal Building on Onondaga Street. Trustees are now leaning toward the plateau, instead, as it's not in a residential area and offers appropriate parking options. Moreover, the size of the rec center would be fixed at the Red Brick; at the plateau, it could expand in the future.
Camden Cuts Ribbon on New Sports Complex
A celebration was held in Camden, New Jersey, on Monday for the grand opening of the Mayor Francisco "Frank" Moran Sports Complex.
It's at the newly renovated Von Nieda Park in the Cramer Hill section of Camden.
The state-of-the-art sports complex is named after the former mayor of Camden.
"Von Nieda Park is a beloved community space, and this investment helps ensure that the park is enjoyable and accessible for the Cramer Hill community for years to come," said Commissioner Jeffrey Nash, liaison to the Parks Department.
"It is only fitting that the sports complex bears Mayor Moran's name. Not only did he grow up in Cramer Hill, but he played a crucial role in the revitalization of parks throughout Camden County during his many years as Parks Director."
